Lake Worth

Lake Worth, Florida, in Palm Beach county, is 6 miles N of Boynton Beach, Florida (center to center) and 58 miles N of Miami, Florida. The city is included in the West Palm Beach - Boca Raton metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 35,133 people lived in Lake Worth.

Lake Worth, situated in Palm Beach County, went by the name 'Jewel' at the turn of the 20th century. In 1911, landowner Fannie James sold the core area of the land to Palm Beach Farms Company. It was then that Harold Bryant and William Greenwood planned to build a city along the water. Gradually, a railway line was opened that connected West Palm Beach to Miami, and the area was named Lucerne. However, since another place with the same name was already in existence, the city was rechristened 'Lake Worth'. The city suffered a number of setbacks, mainly a flood in 1812, and a great hurricane in 1928. This caused a major disruption in the progress of Lake Worth, and there were no significant developments untill much after the Second World War. In the last few decades, though, the city has grown at a rapid rate, and is now a flourishing community.
