Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in Palm Beach county, is 9 miles NW of West Palm Beach, Florida (center to center) and 72 miles N of Miami, Florida. It's known as an upscale residential community and has strict zoning laws and numerous gated communities. The municipality has been designated a "Tree City USA." The Art in Public Places ordinance has provided Palm Beach Gardens with a variety of noteworthy public artwork. The city is home to the headquarters of the Professional Golfer's Association of America, Ameribank and Wackenhut.

Palm Beach Gardens History

Before major development occurred, the area was known for cattle ranches, pine forests, and swamplands. John D. MacArthur purchased a large acreage and made plans to build a vast number of homes. In 1959 the land took the name Palm Beach Gardens and was incorporated as a city but it existed only in documents. During the 1960's the area experienced substantial development. Palm Beach Gardens was smacked by the hurricanes known as Frances, Jeanne and Wilma in 2004 and 2005. The hurricanes caused severe damage to numerous homes and businesses.

Nature trails and numerous eco-systems are located throughout the city. The beaches along the Atlantic Ocean are popular with residents and tourists. Families enjoy the close by Rapids Water Park. Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast provide recreational opportunities and exciting nightlife.

Palm Beach Gardens Higher Education

The city is home to a satellite campus of Palm Beach Community College. The Palm Beach Atlantic University is nearby.
